# EWC codes in Scotland The same list as the rest of the UK, with SEPA’s rules for special waste.

## Does SEPA use the same EWC codes?

Yes. The List of Waste applies across the UK, so Scotland has the same 842 codes. WM3, the guidance for deciding between a pair of codes, is the same in Scotland, England and Wales. Scotland calls hazardous waste special waste.

SEPA’s own [guide to using the EWC to code waste](https://www.sepa.org.uk/media/163421/ewc_guidance.pdf) prints the full list in Appendix 3. It dates from November 2015, and the codes haven’t changed since.

## What does a Scottish waste transfer note need?

- The six-digit EWC code. The [Duty of Care (Scotland) Regulations 2014](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ssi/2014/4/regulation/3) require it.
- A full written description as well. SEPA says the code alone isn’t enough: write “fines from processing mixed C&D waste”, not just “fines”.

## Which EWC code goes on a special waste consignment note?

One. WM3 says a mixed load can’t take several codes on a special waste consignment note in Scotland: use the one code that reflects the process that produced the waste, and describe each waste in the load.

All special waste produced in Scotland needs a note with a SEPA consignment code, wherever in the UK it’s going:

- **SA**: £15, for a single movement or a carrier’s round
- **SB**: £10, for loads of lead acid vehicle batteries only
- **SC**: Free, for extended carrier rounds, offshore waste landed ashore and off-spec material returned to its maker
