## Is waste wood 17 02 01 or 17 02 04*?

GOV.UK lists untreated wood from building and demolition work as 17 02 01, and treated wood containing hazardous substances as 17 02 04*. The two are a pair. To use 17 02 01 you need an assessment, or good evidence of what the wood is, showing it isn’t hazardous. If you can’t find out what’s in it, use 17 02 04*. Treated wood only takes the hazardous code when the treatment has left hazardous substances in it.

## EWC code for pallets, joinery offcuts and household wood

## Does wood in a mixed skip need its own code?

Only if it can be picked out as a separate waste. Then each waste in the skip gets its own code, on its own line of the note. The regulators’ own example is a lead acid battery in a skip of demolition wood: 16 06 01* for the battery, and 17 02 01 for the wood only if the battery hasn’t contaminated it.
