## What a method statement is, and what it is not

**A method statement** says how the job will be done, step by step, in order, with who does what.

**A risk assessment** says what could hurt someone and the controls.

## What the method statement template includes

## Method statement questions

### Is it free?

Yes. The blank, your logo and both downloads are free. There is no account and no email to give.

### Word or PDF?

Word if you will type into it: rows grow as you write, and the steps renumber when you add one. PDF if you will print it and fill it in by hand.

### Method statement or RAMS, which do I need?

A method statement says how the work is done. A RAMS adds the risk assessment. If a client or principal contractor asks for a RAMS, use the [RAMS template](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rams-template). If you already have the risk assessment, this blank has a box for its reference.

### Is a method statement a legal requirement?

No law asks for a document by that name. [CDM 2015 regulation 15](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/51/regulation/15) has a contractor plan, manage and monitor their work so it is carried out without risks to health and safety, so far as is reasonably practicable. A written method is a common way to show how, and many clients and principal contractors ask for one.

### How detailed should the steps be?

Enough for someone new to the job to follow them. One action to a step, in the order it happens, with who does it. Name the plant used and any check before the next step.

### Can I use it for any trade?
