## Is D022 hazardous waste?

**Yes.** Waste is D022 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the chloroform in the TCLP extract with 6 mg/L. A total chloroform result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D022 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required [hazardous waste manifest](https://complyonsite.com/tools/hazardous-waste-manifest), put D022 in Item 13. See [VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=routes).

## What does D022 cover?

D022 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total chloroform.

- **CAS**: 67-66-3
- **Regulatory level**: 6 mg/L in TCLP extract
- **Hazard**: T, toxic
- **Rule**: [40 CFR 261.24](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-I/part-261/section-261.24)

## Is chloroform waste always D022?

| Code | When it fits |
| --- | --- |
| D022 | The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. |
| [D004–D043](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=toxicity) | The chloroform result is below 6 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply. |
| [U044](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=u044) | Unused chloroform is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient. |

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 6 mg/L rules out D022 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

## Which wastes take D022?

| Waste | When it’s D022 |
| --- | --- |
| [Contaminated soil](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=contaminated-soil) | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| [Solvent-contaminated wipes](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=solvent-wipes) | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| [Waste pharmaceuticals](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=pharmaceuticals) | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |

## Which codes sit beside D022?
