## Is D035 hazardous waste?

**Yes.** D035 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds methyl ethyl ketone at 200 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the methyl ethyl ketone in the TCLP extract with 200 mg/L. A total methyl ethyl ketone result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D035 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required [hazardous waste manifest](https://complyonsite.com/tools/hazardous-waste-manifest), put D035 in Item 13. See [VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=routes).

## What does D035 cover?

D035 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds methyl ethyl ketone at 200 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total methyl ethyl ketone.

- **CAS**: 78-93-3
- **Regulatory level**: 200 mg/L in TCLP extract
- **Hazard**: T, toxic
- **Rule**: [40 CFR 261.24](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-I/part-261/section-261.24)

## Is methyl ethyl ketone waste always D035?

| Code | When it fits |
| --- | --- |
| D035 | A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains methyl ethyl ketone at or above 200 mg/L. |
| [D004–D043](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=toxicity) | The methyl ethyl ketone result is below 200 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply. |
| [U159](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=u159) | Unused methyl ethyl ketone is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient. |

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 200 mg/L rules out D035 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

## Which wastes take D035?

| Waste | When it’s D035 |
| --- | --- |
| [Contaminated soil](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=contaminated-soil) | Methyl ethyl ketone leaching from contaminated soil reaches the TCLP limit |
| [Solvent-contaminated wipes](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=solvent-wipes) | Methyl ethyl ketone leaching from solvent-contaminated wipes reaches the TCLP limit |

## Which codes sit beside D035?

| Code | What it is |
| --- | --- |

| [D032](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=d032) | Hexachlorobenzene |
| [D033](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=d033) | Hexachlorobutadiene |
| [D034](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=d034) | Hexachloroethane |
