## Is F005 hazardous waste?

**Yes.** F005 is nonacute F-listed hazardous waste when the source process and waste stream match the listing. The federal table gives it hazard code (I,T), meaning ignitability and toxicity.

F005 depends on how and where the waste arose, not on a concentration test alone. A test may add a characteristic code, but it doesn't remove this listing when its conditions are met.

On a required [hazardous waste manifest](https://complyonsite.com/tools/hazardous-waste-manifest), put F005 in Item 13. See [VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=routes).

## What does F005 cover?

F005 covers spent toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, carbon disulfide, isobutanol, pyridine, benzene, 2-ethoxyethanol or 2-nitropropane. It also covers blends that held at least 10% by volume of any F001, F002, F004 or F005 solvent before use. Still bottoms from recovering these spent solvents or blends are included.

- **Hazard code**: (I,T), ignitability and toxicity
- **Rule**: [40 CFR 261.31](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-I/part-261/subpart-D/section-261.31)

## Is spent toluene or MEK F005 or F003?

| Code | When it fits |
| --- | --- |
| F005 | A named nonhalogenated solvent was spent, or the qualifying before-use blend or recovery still-bottom conditions apply. |
| [F003](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=f003) | A listed nonhalogenated solvent was spent, and the neat-solvent, before-use blend or recovery still-bottom conditions apply. |
| [F004](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=f004) | Cresol, cresylic acid or nitrobenzene was spent as solvent, or the qualifying blend or recovery still-bottom conditions apply. |
| [F002](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=f002) | A named halogenated solvent was spent in solvent use. Blend and still-bottom conditions can also apply, and F001 may overlap. |
| [F001](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=f001) | A listed solvent was used for degreasing, or the qualifying degreasing blend or recovery still-bottom conditions apply. |

Solvent use, what the solvent held before use, and the recovery-residue rule decide among F001–F005. The rows don't replace checking each listing or characteristic that applies on its own. One waste can carry more than one federal code.

## Which wastes take F005?

| Waste | When it’s F005 |
| --- | --- |

| [Parts washer solvent](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=parts-washer-solvent) | Before-use ingredients meet F005 composition conditions for the spent washer fluid |
| Solvent still bottoms | Still bottoms come from recovery of F005 spent solvent |
| [Solvent-contaminated wipes](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=solvent-wipes) | Before-use ingredients of solvent in solvent-contaminated wipes satisfy F005 composition conditions |
| Spray gun cleaning solvent | Before-use ingredients of solvent in spray gun cleaning solvent satisfy F005 composition conditions |
| [Waste pesticides](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?waste=pesticides) | A spent F005 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present |
