## Is K061 hazardous waste?

**Yes.** K061 is nonacute K-listed hazardous waste when the waste comes from the named process and matches the named stream. The federal table gives it hazard code (T), toxicity.

A K listing depends on where and how the waste was made, not on a test result alone. A test may add a characteristic code, but it doesn't remove the listing.

On a required [hazardous waste manifest](https://complyonsite.com/tools/hazardous-waste-manifest), put K061 in Item 13. Check the [VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?list=routes) too.

## What does K061 cover?

Dust or sludge from the emission controls of electric furnaces making primary steel. The 261.4(a)(11) dross exclusion applies only with specified high-temperature metals recovery, shipment in drums where shipped, and no land disposal beforehand.

- **Hazard code**: (T), toxicity
- **Industry**: Iron and steel
- **Rule**: [40 CFR 261.32](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-I/part-261/subpart-D/section-261.32)

## Is electric-furnace dust or sludge from steelmaking always K061?

| Code | When it fits |
| --- | --- |
| K061 | Emission control dust/sludge from the primary production of steel in electric furnaces. |
| [K062](https://complyonsite.com/tools/rcra-waste-codes?code=k062) | Spent pickle liquor generated by steel finishing operations of facilities within the iron and steel industry (SIC Codes 331 and 332). |

The industry, production step and waste form tell these K listings apart, not the chemicals in the waste. The rows above are only the nearby listed streams, so also add any characteristic or other listing that fits. One waste can carry more than one federal code.
