    surface water – impacted

AER oilfield waste code.

Surface water that has been contaminated on site, such as rain or snowmelt from a spill area.

Is Alberta SWTRIM hazardous waste?

Not from the code alone. Alberta SWTRIM is impacted surface water in the AER oilfield-waste system. The waste must come from upstream facilities, wells or pipelines on that route. The code doesn’t say whether it is dangerous oilfield waste.

Dangerous oilfield waste stays on the AER route within Alberta and needs no Alberta hazardous-waste manifest unless it leaves Alberta. Record the AER code in the oilfield waste information. A regulated export also needs the federal movement assessment, and a generic industrial category doesn’t replace the AER code.

What does Alberta SWTRIM cover?

Surface run-off, snow, ice or leachate affected by contamination, where the water fails the Directive 055 criteria for discharge at the surface. The code names the stream for the AER system. Its actual composition and properties still decide whether it is dangerous and how it is handled.

Is impacted surface water always Alberta SWTRIM?

CodeWhen it fits
SWTRIMThe waste comes from the AER upstream oilfield route and is this material.

Origin matters. Waste from an unrelated industry doesn’t become oilfield waste because its material has a similar name.
