The years change from calendar years (through 1985) to financial years at 1986/87, and the rate denominator changes at 2004/05. From 2021/22 the figures come from HSE’s July 2026 fatal release (RIDFATAL); for the years both tables cover, its counts and rates match RIDHIST.

Financial years run from April to March. Dashed markers show the breaks; lines stop at each break. p = provisional (hollow point); r = revised (square point).

Shaded bands are HSE’s 95% confidence intervals. The survey samples workers, so each estimate has uncertainty; small differences may reflect sampling rather than a real change.

Each point is a non-overlapping three-year annual average. Axis labels give the start and end years: 01–04 means 2001/02–2003/04. Figures cover injuries in the current or most recent job. Pandemic years affected the survey.

2014/15–2024/25p uses the same specified and over-7-day categories, from the first year of HSE’s RIDIND industry table. Earlier years are not comparable: the absence threshold changed from over-3-day to over-7-day in 2012 and specified injuries replaced major injuries in 2013.

ONR-enforced sites are excluded from 2024/25, so coverage changes in the final year. RIDDOR counts injuries reported by employers; HSE estimates only around half of reportable employee injuries are reported. These counts do not measure all workplace injuries.

Work-related ill health in construction

An estimated 79,000 construction workers had work-related ill health, including 41,000 with musculoskeletal disorders (2022/23–2024/25, annual average).

Prevalence includes new and long-standing cases attributed to work in the current or most recent job. Musculoskeletal disorders are part of all ill health; do not add these two figures. HSE publishes the estimates in thousands of workers. Whiskers show 95% confidence intervals: all ill health 64–93 thousand; musculoskeletal disorders 31–52 thousand.

Reading these figures

Provisional and revised
p means provisional: HSE may change the count as cases are confirmed. r means revised. Fatal figures for 2025/26p are due to be finalised in July 2027; 2024/25r fatal figures were revised in July 2026. Non-fatal figures for 2024/25p remain provisional until November 2026.
Next releases
Fatal injury statistics are released in July. The July 2026 release is included here. The next full RIDDOR and annual injury and ill-health update is due in November 2026. HSE’s tables index names the planned update.
Counts and rates answer different questions
Counts show how many people were harmed. Rates divide by the relevant number of workers, employees or self-employed workers and allow for different group sizes. Annual fatal counts fluctuate; five-year average rates give a steadier comparison.
RIDDOR misses injuries
Only around half of reportable non-fatal employee injuries are reported. Self-employed non-fatal injuries are severely under-reported, so HSE does not publish a rate for them. HSE prefers the LFS for measuring the scale of non-fatal injury.
The LFS is a survey
These industry figures cover the current or most recent job, rather than every job a worker has held. They are not directly comparable with HSE’s all-jobs headlines. Confidence intervals describe sampling error. Figures from 2018/19 to 2023/24 were reweighted in November 2025; pandemic years also affected the survey.
Long series have breaks
Reporting rules changed in 1981, 1986, 1996, 2012 and 2013. Industry classification changed between SIC 1980, SIC 1992 and SIC 2007. Rate denominators changed in 2004/05. These changes limit comparisons over the full historical series.
Fatal accidents are not all work-related deaths
The worker death figures count fatal injuries reported under RIDDOR. They exclude deaths from occupational disease, such as asbestos-related cancer, and do not count deaths of members of the public.
