Chlorinated hydrocarbon process residue and tar

Use F024 only when the waste stream and non-specific Schedule 12 source both match.

Process residue & tar from making short-chain chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. Stream and source must both match.

Is Federal F024 hazardous waste?

Yes, if the listing and federal definition apply. Federal F024 lists chlorinated hydrocarbon process residue and tar. The source, composition, concentration or test condition on record must match, and the exclusions in SOR/2021-25 still apply.

On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.

What does Federal F024 cover?

This is distillation residue, heavy ends, tar and reactor clean-out waste from making chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons with 1 to 5 carbons by free-radical processes. Wastewater, wastewater sludge, spent catalyst and waste listed separately in Schedule 12 are excluded.

Official wording
Process waste, including distillation residues, heavy ends, tars and reactor clean-out waste from the production of certain chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons by free radical catalyzed processes, the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons being those having carbon chain lengths ranging from 1 to 5, with varying amounts and positions of chlorine substitution, and excluding wastewaters, wastewater treatment sludge, spent catalysts and waste set out in this Schedule.

Is chlorinated hydrocarbon tar Federal F024 or another code?

CodeWhen it fits
F024Residue from the free-radical process for chlorinated hydrocarbons, and not an excluded stream.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
