Federal HAZ codes
Dioxin or furan waste above 100 ng/kg dioxin equivalent
Use HAZ6 within the exact inclusions, exclusions and thresholds in its Schedule 6 entry.
Is Federal HAZ6 hazardous waste?
Yes, if the listing and federal definition apply. Federal HAZ6 is the federal listing for dioxin or furan waste above 100 ng/kg dioxin equivalent. The source, make-up, concentration or test result must match the listing, and the exclusions in SOR/2021-25 still apply.
On federally regulated international shipments, the applicant enters the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. Also apply the movement rules and exclusions.
What does Federal HAZ6 cover?
HAZ6 covers polychlorinated dibenzofurans and dibenzo-p-dioxins when together they exceed 100 ng/kg as a 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalent. The equivalent is worked out with the I-TEF factors in the Schedule 6 entry.
- Official wording
- (1) Waste that contains, in a concentration of more than 100 ng/kg of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalent, calculated in accordance with subitem (2), (a)total polychlorinated dibenzofurans that have a molecular formula C12H8-nClnO in which “n” is greater than 1; or (b)total polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins that have a molecular formula C12H8-nClnO2 in which “n” is greater than 1. (2) The concentration is calculated in accordance with “International Toxicity Equivalency Factor (I-TEF) Method of Risk Assessment for Complex Mixtures of Dioxins and Related Compounds”, Pilot Study on International Information Exchange on Dioxins and Related Compounds, Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Report Number 176, August 1988, as amended from time to time, using the following factors: (a) 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin1.0 (b) 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzodioxin0.5 (c) 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzodioxin0.1 (d) 1,2,3,7,8,9-hexachlorodibenzodioxin0.1 (e) 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzodioxin0.1 (f) 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzodioxin0.01 (g)octachlorodibenzodioxin0.001 (h) 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran0.1 (i) 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran0.5 (j) 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran0.05 (k) 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran0.1 (l) 1,2,3,7,8,9-hexachlorodibenzofuran0.1 (m) 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran0.1 (n) 2,3,4,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran0.1 (o) 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran0.01 (p) 1,2,3,4,7,8,9-heptachlorodibenzofuran0.01 (q)octachlorodibenzofuran0.001

Is dioxin or furan waste above 100 ng/kg dioxin equivalent Federal HAZ6?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| HAZ6 | The I-TEF result for the named dioxins or furans exceeds 100 ng/kg as a 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalent. |
Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and what the tests show. A shared chemical or process word isn't enough, because the full wording and any federal exclusion still apply.
