Mercury fulminate — an explosive compound

P-list unused product.

Acute hazardous P-listed waste for unused mercury fulminate, a reactive, toxic explosive that contains mercury.

Is P065 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. P065 covers unused mercury fulminate that is thrown away, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a P-listed waste, so it is acute hazardous waste and the stricter acute quantities apply even for small amounts.

On a required hazardous waste manifest, put P065 in Item 13. For VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers, follow the linked rules.

What does P065 cover?

Unused mercury fulminate is included when thrown away as pure or technical grade, or as the only active ingredient in a formulation. That includes off-specification batches, residues in non-empty containers and spill cleanup residues. Inactive ingredients don't change this.

Is waste mercury fulminate always P065?

CodeWhen it fits
P065The unused chemical is thrown away pure, as technical grade or as the only active ingredient. Residues from that product fit too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings too.

A listed unused product can also show a characteristic, so both rows can fit together. A manufacturing waste that merely contains this chemical is not P065. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, usually doesn't remove the listing. Only an exclusion, exception or approved delisting does.
