Waste pesticides

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Ignitable waste

A representative sample of waste pesticides meets the D001 test for its physical form

    When to use D001
  • F-listed waste

Spent halogenated solvents used for degreasing

An F001 solvent was spent in degreasing; pesticide application or cleanup alone does not meet F001

    When to use F001
  • F-listed waste

    Spent halogenated solvents

A spent F002 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present

    When to use F002
  • F-listed waste

Spent non-halogenated solvents: acetone, xylene and related solvents

A spent F003 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present

    When to use F003
  • F-listed waste

Spent cresol, cresylic acid and nitrobenzene solvents

A spent F004 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present

    When to use F004
  • F-listed waste

Spent toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and related solvents

A spent F005 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present

    When to use F005
  • U-listed waste

    Lindane — an insecticide

The discarded unused commercial chemical product is lindane as the sole active ingredient

    When to use U129
  • U-listed waste

Cacodylic acid — an arsenical herbicide and defoliant

The discarded unused commercial chemical product is cacodylic acid as the sole active ingredient

    When to use U136
  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

Phorate — an insecticide and nematicide

The discarded unused commercial chemical product is phorate as the sole active ingredient

    When to use P094
  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

    Toxaphene — an insecticide

The discarded unused commercial chemical product is toxaphene as the sole active ingredient

    When to use P123
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Endrin

Endrin leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D012
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Lindane

Lindane leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D013
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Methoxychlor

Methoxychlor leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D014
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Toxaphene

Toxaphene leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D015
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    2,4-D

2,4-D leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D016
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    2,4,5-TP (Silvex)

2,4,5-TP (Silvex) leaching from waste pesticides reaches the TCLP limit

    When to use D017

Other codes that mention it 31

  • Acute hazardousF-listed waste

Waste from making or manufacturing use of tri- or tetrachlorophenol

    When to use F020
  • K-listed waste

Process water from making a dithiocarbamate pesticide ingredient

    When to use K123
  • K-listed waste

Reactor scrubber water from making a dithiocarbamate pesticide ingredient

    When to use K124
  • K-listed waste

Production solids from a dithiocarbamate pesticide ingredient

    When to use K125
  • K-listed waste

Dust and floor sweepings from making or formulating dithiocarbamate pesticides

    When to use K126
  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

    Mexacarbate — a carbamate pesticide

    When to use P128
  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

    Tirpate — a carbamate pesticide

    When to use P185
  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

    Carbosulfan — a carbamate pesticide

    When to use P189
Waste pesticides take D001 when ignitable. Spent solvents from application or cleanup add F001 to F005 codes.

Which RCRA codes apply to waste pesticides?

Unused products, rinsewater, spill debris and cleaning solvents can each take different codes. Beyond these examples, other toxic contaminants and other qualifying P or U products can apply.

CodeWhen it applies
D001A representative sample of waste pesticides meets the D001 test for its physical form
F001An F001 solvent was spent in degreasing. Applying or cleaning up pesticide alone doesn't meet F001
F002A spent F002 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present
F003A spent F003 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present
F004A spent F004 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present
F005A spent F005 solvent from pesticide application or cleanup is present
U129Discarded unused commercial product with lindane as the sole active ingredient
U136Discarded unused commercial product with cacodylic acid as the sole active ingredient
P094Discarded unused commercial product with phorate as the sole active ingredient
P123Discarded unused commercial product with toxaphene as the sole active ingredient
D012Endrin in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit
D013Lindane in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit
D014Methoxychlor in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit
D015Toxaphene in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit
D0162,4-D in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit
D0172,4,5-TP (Silvex) in the leachate reaches the TCLP limit

How do I prove the code for waste pesticides?

The household exclusion applies only to pesticide discarded as genuine household waste.

The farmer exemption covers only the farmer's own hazardous waste pesticide. Each empty container must be triple-rinsed under 261.7(b)(3), and the residues disposed of on that farm as the pesticide label directs.

The exemption is from Parts 262, 264, 265, 268 and 270.

The universal-waste route takes qualifying recalled pesticides and unused products in a waste-pesticide collection program, and the program must meet 40 CFR 273.3.

Other hazardous pesticides follow the ordinary generator rules. The 40 CFR 262.70 farmer exemption is separate.

Is there another way to manage waste pesticides?

Household pesticides and a farmer's own pesticides can use separate exclusions, set out in the route conditions.

Some recalled or collected unused pesticides can use the universal-waste route. Check the universal-waste time and quantity limits and the loss-of-characteristic rule for F003 and some U codes.
