D013, Lindane.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Lindane

Lindane at 0.4 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with lindane at 0.4 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Lindane is an insecticide & head-lice treatment.

Is D013 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D013 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds lindane at or above 0.4 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the lindane in the TCLP extract with 0.4 mg/L. A total lindane result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D013 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D013 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D013 cover?

D013 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with lindane at or above 0.4 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total lindane.

Is lindane waste always D013?

CodeWhen it fits
D013The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds lindane at or above 0.4 mg/L.
D004–D043The lindane result is below 0.4 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.
U129Unused lindane is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.4 mg/L rules out D013 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
