D010, Selenium.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Selenium

Selenium at 1 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Grey-green metal salts in a sack, drawn for RCRA waste code D010, selenium. Toxic metal waste that leaches 1 mg/L or more.
Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with selenium at 1 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. A metal used in glass, pigments & electronics.

Is D010 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D010 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds selenium at or above 1 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the selenium in the TCLP extract with 1 mg/L. A total selenium result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D010 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D010 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D010 cover?

D010 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with selenium at or above 1 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total selenium.

Is selenium waste always D010?

CodeWhen it fits
D010The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds selenium at or above 1 mg/L.
D004–D043The selenium result is below 1 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 1 mg/L rules out D010 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D010?

WasteWhen it’s D010

Selenium-contaminated wasteIts selenium leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Contaminated soilIts selenium leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Waste pharmaceuticalsIts selenium leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
