D007, Chromium.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Chromium

Chromium at 5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Grey-green metal salts in a sack, drawn for RCRA waste code D007, chromium. Chrome waste that leaches 5 mg/L or more.
Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with chromium at 5 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Found in plating, pigment & tanning wastes.

Is D007 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D007 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chromium at or above 5 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the chromium in the TCLP extract with 5 mg/L. A total chromium result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D007 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D007 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D007 cover?

D007 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with chromium at or above 5 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total chromium.

Is chromium waste always D007?

CodeWhen it fits
D007The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chromium at or above 5 mg/L.
D004–D043The chromium result is below 5 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 5 mg/L rules out D007 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
