D009, Mercury.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Mercury

Mercury at 0.2 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Grey-green metal salts in a sack, drawn for RCRA waste code D009, mercury. Quicksilver waste that leaches 0.2 mg/L or more.
Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with mercury at 0.2 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Found in lamps, switches & thermometers.

Is D009 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D009 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds mercury at or above 0.2 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the mercury in the TCLP extract with 0.2 mg/L. A total mercury result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D009 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D009 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D009 cover?

D009 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with mercury at or above 0.2 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total mercury.

Is mercury waste always D009?

CodeWhen it fits
D009The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds mercury at or above 0.2 mg/L.
D004–D043The mercury result is below 0.2 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.
U151Unused mercury is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.2 mg/L rules out D009 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
