D005, Barium.
Characteristic hazardous waste
Barium
Barium at 100 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Is D005 hazardous waste?
Yes. Waste is D005 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds barium at or above 100 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.
Compare the barium in the TCLP extract with 100 mg/L. A total barium result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.
D005 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D005 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.
What does D005 cover?
D005 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with barium at or above 100 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total barium.

Is barium waste always D005?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D005 | The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds barium at or above 100 mg/L. |
| D004–D043 | The barium result is below 100 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply. |
Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 100 mg/L rules out D005 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
Which wastes take D005?
| Waste | When it’s D005 |
|---|---|
| Waste contaminated with toxic metals | Its barium leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Barium-contaminated waste | Its barium leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Contaminated soil | Its barium leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Waste pharmaceuticals | Its barium leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Waste printing ink | Its barium leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
Which codes sit beside D005?
| Code | What it is |
|---|---|
| D001 | Ignitable waste |
| D002 | Corrosive waste |
| D003 | Reactive waste |
| D004 | Arsenic |
| D006 | Cadmium |
| D007 | Chromium |
| D008 | Lead |
| D009 | Mercury |
