D002, Corrosive waste.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Corrosive waste

Aqueous waste with pH 2 or lower or 12.5 or higher, or liquid that corrodes steel at the specified rate.

Acid carboy, drawn for RCRA waste code D002, corrosive waste. Strong acids & caustics, at pH 2 or lower or 12.5 or higher.
Corrosive waste is characteristic hazardous waste. Aqueous waste at pH 2 or lower or 12.5 or higher, or liquid that eats through steel.

Is D002 hazardous waste?

Yes. D002 is hazardous waste when a representative sample meets either federal corrosivity test. The pH test is for aqueous waste. The steel-corrosion test is for liquid waste and stands alone.

D002 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D002 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D002 cover?

D002 covers aqueous waste with a pH of 2 or lower, or 12.5 or higher, measured by Method 9040C. It also covers a liquid that corrodes SAE 1020 steel faster than 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) per year at 55 °C (130 °F), measured by Method 1110A. Either result is enough.

Is corrosive waste D002 or D001?

CodeWhen it fits
D002An aqueous sample meets either pH limit, or a liquid exceeds the steel-corrosion rate.
D001The waste isn't D002 but meets an ignitability criterion on its own.
No D002 codeNeither corrosivity test is met. Check every other characteristic and listing.

Only aqueous waste takes the pH test, but any liquid can take the steel-corrosion test. The testing or knowledge behind the call must support the test you use.

Which wastes take D002?

WasteWhen it’s D002
Acid wasteAn aqueous sample has pH 2 or lower, or the liquid corrodes steel at the federal test rate.
Caustic or alkaline wasteAn aqueous sample has pH 12.5 or higher, or the liquid corrodes steel at the federal test rate.
Paint stripping wasteA representative sample meets the corrosivity definition, such as a caustic stripper.
Radiator repair wasteZinc-chloride coolant or cleaning liquid meets the corrosivity definition.
Shop drain and sump sludgeThe sludge's aqueous pH or liquid steel corrosion meets the D002 test.
Tank bottoms and product heelsThe residue is corrosive.
Tank and railcar washwaterThe washwater's aqueous pH or liquid steel corrosion meets the D002 test.
Spent rust-removal acidThe waste meets the corrosivity definition.
