D008, Lead.
Characteristic hazardous waste
Lead
Lead at 5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Is D008 hazardous waste?
Yes. Waste is D008 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds lead at or above 5 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.
Compare the lead in the TCLP extract with 5 mg/L. A total lead result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.
D008 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D008 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.
What does D008 cover?
D008 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with lead at or above 5 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total lead.

Is lead waste always D008?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D008 | The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds lead at or above 5 mg/L. |
| D004–D043 | The lead result is below 5 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply. |
Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 5 mg/L rules out D008 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
Which wastes take D008?
| Waste | When it’s D008 |
|---|---|
| Waste contaminated with toxic metals | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Lead-contaminated waste | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Contaminated soil | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Demolition debris | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Waste lead pipe | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Lead-based paint debris | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Paint and paint waste | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Spray booth waste | Its lead leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
