    Nicotine and salts

P-list unused product.

Closed chemical drum, drawn for RCRA waste code P075, nicotine and salts. Tobacco alkaloid & its salts, discarded unused.
Acute hazardous P-listed waste for unused nicotine & its salts. Patches, gums & lozenges sold over the counter are excluded.

Is P075 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. P075 covers unused nicotine and salts that is thrown away, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a P-listed waste, so it is acute hazardous waste and the stricter acute quantities apply even for small amounts.

On a required hazardous waste manifest, put P075 in Item 13. For VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers, follow the linked rules.

What does P075 cover?

Unused nicotine and its salts are included when thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the only active ingredient in a formulation. Off-specification product and qualifying container or spill residues are included too. FDA-approved over-the-counter nicotine replacement patches, gums and lozenges are outside P075. Other nicotine products are not.

The table gives the CAS of the parent compound. It doesn't cover every salt or derivative.

Is waste nicotine and salts always P075?

CodeWhen it fits
P075The unused chemical is thrown away pure, as technical grade or as the only active ingredient. Residues from that product fit too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings too.

A listed unused product can also show a characteristic, so both rows can fit together. A manufacturing waste that merely contains this chemical is not P075. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, usually doesn't remove the listing. Only an exclusion, exception or approved delisting does. The CAS number is for the parent compound and doesn't prove every salt shares it, so the listed chemical wording decides.
