U008, Acrylic acid.
U-listed waste
Acrylic acid
U-list unused product.
Is U008 hazardous waste?
Yes, when the listing applies. U008 covers the unused acrylic acid described below when it is discarded, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a U-listed waste, not an acute P-listed one. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.
The listing rests only on ignitability, corrosivity or reactivity. Under 261.3(g) it stops applying once the waste shows no hazardous-waste characteristic. Another listing can still apply, and the land disposal restrictions continue.
U008 is nonacute hazardous waste. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put U008 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.
What does U008 cover?
This covers unused acrylic acid discarded in pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. It also covers off-specification batches, residues in nonempty containers and spill cleanup residues from those products. Inactive ingredients don't stop acrylic acid counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is acrylic acid waste always U008?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| U008 | The unused chemical is discarded as a pure or technical grade product or as the sole active ingredient. Residues from that product also count. |
| Characteristic waste (D001–D043) | A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings that apply too. |
Both can apply, since a listed unused product can also show a characteristic. Having this chemical in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U008. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, doesn't normally remove the listing. Only an exclusion, an exception or an approved delisting does.
