U031, n-Butyl alcohol.
U-listed waste
n-Butyl alcohol
U-list unused product.
Is U031 hazardous waste?
Yes, when the listing applies. U031 covers the unused n-Butyl alcohol described below when it is discarded, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a U-listed waste, not an acute P-listed one. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.
The listing rests only on ignitability, corrosivity or reactivity. Under 261.3(g) it stops applying once the waste shows no hazardous-waste characteristic. Another listing can still apply, and the land disposal restrictions continue.
U031 is nonacute hazardous waste. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put U031 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.
What does U031 cover?
This covers unused n-Butyl alcohol discarded in pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. It also covers off-specification batches, residues in nonempty containers and spill cleanup residues from those products. Inactive ingredients don't stop n-Butyl alcohol counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is n-Butyl alcohol waste always U031?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| U031 | The unused chemical is discarded as a pure or technical grade product or as the sole active ingredient. Residues from that product also count. |
| F003 | It is spent after solvent use, alone or blended only with F003 solvents before use, including recovery still bottoms. |
| F001–F005 | Before use, the blend contained an F003 solvent plus at least 10% by volume total F001, F002, F004 or F005 solvents. |
| Characteristic waste (D001–D043) | A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings that apply too. |
Both can apply, since a listed unused product can also show a characteristic. Having this chemical in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U031. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, doesn't normally remove the listing. Only an exclusion, an exception or an approved delisting does. Solvent use matters. Using the chemical as an ingredient or reactant doesn't make it a spent F-listed solvent. Check each listing's blend conditions before use.
