U080, Methylene chloride.

  • U-listed waste

    Methylene chloride

U-list unused product.

Toxic U-listed hazardous waste for unused methylene chloride, a paint stripper & degreasing solvent.

Is U080 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. U080 covers unused methylene chloride that is thrown away, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a U-listed waste, not an acute P-listed one. Whether it is listed depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.

U080 is nonacute hazardous waste once the listing holds. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put U080 in Item 13. Also read VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.

What does U080 cover?

Unused methylene chloride counts when it is discarded pure, in technical grade, or as the only active ingredient of a formulation. Off-specification batches, residues left in non-empty containers and spill cleanup residues of those products count too. Inactive ingredients don't stop it being the sole active ingredient.

Is waste methylene chloride U080, F001 or F002?

CodeWhen it fits
U080The unused chemical is thrown away pure, in technical grade or as the sole active ingredient. Qualifying product residues count too.
F001Methylene chloride left over after degreasing, or a still bottom from recovering that degreasing solvent.
F002Methylene chloride left over after solvent use, or a recovery still bottom. Degreasing can bring in F001 too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation shows a hazardous-waste characteristic. Assess any process listings too.

The rows can stack, since an unused listed product can also show a characteristic. Finding the chemical in manufacturing waste doesn't make that waste U080. Go by where the waste came from, what was in it and how it was used. Mixing listed waste with other solid waste, or treating it, usually doesn't end the listing. That takes an exclusion, an exception or an approved delisting. It must be used as a solvent. Using it as an ingredient or reactant doesn't make it a spent F-listed solvent. Each F listing also has conditions on the blend before use.
