U121, Trichloromonofluoromethane.

  • U-listed waste

    Trichloromonofluoromethane

U-list unused product.

Toxic U-listed hazardous waste for unused trichloromonofluoromethane, a refrigerant gas (CFC-11). Also called CFC-11.

Is U121 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. U121 is a nonacute U-listed hazardous waste, not an acute P-listed one. It covers unused trichloromonofluoromethane thrown away, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.

Put U121 in Item 13 of a required hazardous waste manifest. The VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers still apply.

What is U121 waste?

It covers unused trichloromonofluoromethane thrown away in pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. Off-specification batches, nonempty-container residues and spill cleanup residues count too. Inactive ingredients don’t change that.

Is trichloromonofluoromethane waste always U121?

CodeWhen it fits
U121The unused chemical is thrown away pure, technical grade or as the sole active ingredient. Qualifying product residues fit too.
F001It is spent after use in degreasing, or is a still bottom from recovering that degreasing solvent.
F002It is spent after solvent use, or is a recovery still bottom. Degreasing can bring in F001 too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation has a hazardous-waste characteristic. Any process listing that fits can apply too.

The rows can apply together, since a listed unused product can also have a characteristic. A manufacturing waste isn’t U121 just because it contains this chemical. Match the waste’s origin, formulation and use history. Mixing or treating listed waste doesn’t generally remove the listing. That takes an exclusion, an exception or an approved delisting that fits. Using the chemical as an ingredient or reactant doesn’t by itself make it a spent F-listed solvent. Compare each listing’s blend conditions before use.
