U169, Nitrobenzene.
U-listed waste
Nitrobenzene
U-list unused product.
Is U169 hazardous waste?
Yes, when the listing applies. U169 covers unused nitrobenzene thrown away as described below, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a nonacute U-listed waste, not an acute P-listed one. The listing turns on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone. The table marks these entries differently. An entry with no letter, like “Benzene, nitro-”, is toxic (T) by default under 261.33(f), not free of hazard. “Nitrobenzene (I,T)” is marked (I,T).
On a required hazardous waste manifest, put U169 in Item 13. Also check the VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.
What does U169 cover?
This covers unused nitrobenzene discarded as pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. That includes off-specification batches, residues in nonempty containers and cleanup residues from spills of these products. Inactive ingredients don't stop it counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is waste nitrobenzene always U169?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| U169 | The unused chemical is discarded as pure or technical grade, or as the sole active ingredient. Residues from that product count too. |
| D036 | The waste’s TCLP extract holds nitrobenzene at 2 mg/L or more. The product listing may also apply. |
| F004 | The waste is spent after solvent use, or is a still bottom from recovery. The F004 blend conditions also apply. |
| Characteristic waste (D001–D043) | A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous waste characteristic. Check any process listings that apply too. |
The rows can apply together, so a listed unused product can also exhibit a characteristic. This chemical turning up in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U169. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, usually doesn't remove the listing. That takes an applicable exclusion, exception or approved delisting. Using the chemical as an ingredient or reactant doesn't by itself make it a spent F-listed solvent. Check each listing's blend conditions from before use.
Which wastes take U169?
| Waste | When it’s U169 |
|---|---|
| Unused nitrobenzene | The discarded commercial product is pure or technical-grade nitrobenzene, or nitrobenzene is its only active ingredient. |
