D036, Nitrobenzene.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Nitrobenzene

Nitrobenzene at 2 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with nitrobenzene at 2 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is used in dyes & polishes.

Is D036 hazardous waste?

Yes. D036 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds nitrobenzene at 2 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the nitrobenzene in the TCLP extract with 2 mg/L. A total nitrobenzene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D036 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D036 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D036 cover?

D036 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds nitrobenzene at 2 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total nitrobenzene.

Is nitrobenzene waste always D036?

CodeWhen it fits
D036A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains nitrobenzene at or above 2 mg/L.
D004–D043The nitrobenzene result is below 2 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
U169Unused nitrobenzene is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 2 mg/L rules out D036 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
