D037, Pentachlorophenol.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Pentachlorophenol

Pentachlorophenol at 100 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with pentachlorophenol at 100 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is a wood preservative.

Is D037 hazardous waste?

Yes. D037 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds pentachlorophenol at 100 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the pentachlorophenol in the TCLP extract with 100 mg/L. A total pentachlorophenol result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D037 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D037 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D037 cover?

D037 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds pentachlorophenol at 100 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total pentachlorophenol.

Is pentachlorophenol waste always D037?

CodeWhen it fits
D037A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains pentachlorophenol at or above 100 mg/L.
D004–D043The pentachlorophenol result is below 100 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 100 mg/L rules out D037 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D037?

WasteWhen it’s D037
Contaminated soilPentachlorophenol leaching from contaminated soil reaches the TCLP limit
Treated wood wastePentachlorophenol leaching from treated wood waste reaches the TCLP limit
