D033, Hexachlorobutadiene.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Hexachlorobutadiene

Hexachlorobutadiene at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with hexachlorobutadiene at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is a chlorinated solvent by-product.

Is D033 hazardous waste?

Yes. D033 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds hexachlorobutadiene at 0.5 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the hexachlorobutadiene in the TCLP extract with 0.5 mg/L. A total hexachlorobutadiene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D033 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D033 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D033 cover?

D033 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds hexachlorobutadiene at 0.5 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total hexachlorobutadiene.

Is hexachlorobutadiene waste always D033?

CodeWhen it fits
D033A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains hexachlorobutadiene at or above 0.5 mg/L.
D004–D043The hexachlorobutadiene result is below 0.5 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
U128Unused hexachlorobutadiene is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.5 mg/L rules out D033 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
