D035, Methyl ethyl ketone.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Methyl ethyl ketone

Methyl ethyl ketone at 200 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Solvent drum with vapour, drawn for RCRA waste code D035, methyl ethyl ketone. Solvent waste that leaches 200 mg/L or more.
Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) at 200 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is a paint & glue solvent.

Is D035 hazardous waste?

Yes. D035 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds methyl ethyl ketone at 200 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the methyl ethyl ketone in the TCLP extract with 200 mg/L. A total methyl ethyl ketone result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D035 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D035 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D035 cover?

D035 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds methyl ethyl ketone at 200 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total methyl ethyl ketone.

Is methyl ethyl ketone waste always D035?

CodeWhen it fits
D035A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains methyl ethyl ketone at or above 200 mg/L.
D004–D043The methyl ethyl ketone result is below 200 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
U159Unused methyl ethyl ketone is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 200 mg/L rules out D035 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D035?

WasteWhen it’s D035
Contaminated soilMethyl ethyl ketone leaching from contaminated soil reaches the TCLP limit
Solvent-contaminated wipesMethyl ethyl ketone leaching from solvent-contaminated wipes reaches the TCLP limit
