D032, Hexachlorobenzene.
Characteristic hazardous waste
Hexachlorobenzene
Hexachlorobenzene at 0.13 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.
Is D032 hazardous waste?
Yes. D032 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds hexachlorobenzene at 0.13 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.
Compare the hexachlorobenzene in the TCLP extract with 0.13 mg/L. A total hexachlorobenzene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.
D032 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D032 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.
What does D032 cover?
D032 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds hexachlorobenzene at 0.13 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total hexachlorobenzene. Under Table 1 footnote 3, the quantitation limit becomes the regulatory level when it is higher than the calculated level.

Is hexachlorobenzene waste always D032?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D032 | A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains hexachlorobenzene at or above 0.13 mg/L. |
| D004–D043 | The hexachlorobenzene result is below 0.13 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply. |
| U127 | Unused hexachlorobenzene is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient. |
Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.13 mg/L rules out D032 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous. Table 1 footnote 3 notes the quantitation-limit qualification for this entry.
Which wastes take D032?
| Waste | When it’s D032 |
|---|---|
| Contaminated soil | Hexachlorobenzene leaching from contaminated soil reaches the TCLP limit |
Which codes sit beside D032?

| D029 | 1,1-Dichloroethylene |
| D030 | 2,4-Dinitrotoluene |
| D031 | Heptachlor (and its epoxide) |
| D033 | Hexachlorobutadiene |
| D034 | Hexachloroethane |
