D031, Heptachlor (and its epoxide).

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Heptachlor (and its epoxide)

Heptachlor (and its epoxide) at 0.008 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with heptachlor or its epoxide at 0.008 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Heptachlor is an insecticide.

Is D031 hazardous waste?

Yes. D031 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds heptachlor (and its epoxide) at 0.008 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the heptachlor (and its epoxide) in the TCLP extract with 0.008 mg/L. A total heptachlor (and its epoxide) result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D031 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D031 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D031 cover?

D031 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds heptachlor (and its epoxide) at 0.008 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total heptachlor (and its epoxide).

Is heptachlor (and its epoxide) waste always D031?

CodeWhen it fits
D031A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains heptachlor (and its epoxide) at or above 0.008 mg/L.
D004–D043The heptachlor (and its epoxide) result is below 0.008 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
P059Unused heptachlor (and its epoxide) is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.008 mg/L rules out D031 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
