P059, Heptachlor — an insecticide.

  • Acute hazardousP-listed waste

    Heptachlor — an insecticide

P-list unused product.

Acute hazardous P-listed waste for unused heptachlor, a toxic organochlorine insecticide. Only the unused chemical takes P059.

Is P059 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. P059 covers unused heptachlor that is thrown away, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a P-listed waste, so it is acute hazardous waste and the stricter acute quantities apply even for small amounts.

On a required hazardous waste manifest, put P059 in Item 13. For VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers, follow the linked rules.

What does P059 cover?

Unused heptachlor is included when thrown away as pure or technical grade, or as the only active ingredient in a formulation. That includes off-specification batches, residues in non-empty containers and spill cleanup residues. Inactive ingredients don't change this.

Is waste heptachlor always P059?

CodeWhen it fits
P059The unused chemical is thrown away pure, as technical grade or as the only active ingredient. Residues from that product fit too.
D031The waste's TCLP extract holds heptachlor (and its epoxide) at 0.008 mg/L or more. The product listing can apply too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings too.

A listed unused product can also show a characteristic, so both rows can fit together. A manufacturing waste that merely contains this chemical is not P059. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, usually doesn't remove the listing. Only an exclusion, exception or approved delisting does.
