D027, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    1,4-Dichlorobenzene

1,4-Dichlorobenzene at 7.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with 1,4-dichlorobenzene at 7.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. A moth repellent chemical.

Is D027 hazardous waste?

Yes. D027 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds 1,4-dichlorobenzene at 7.5 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the 1,4-dichlorobenzene in the TCLP extract with 7.5 mg/L. A total 1,4-dichlorobenzene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D027 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D027 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D027 cover?

D027 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds 1,4-dichlorobenzene at 7.5 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total 1,4-dichlorobenzene.

Is 1,4-dichlorobenzene waste always D027?

CodeWhen it fits
D027A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains 1,4-dichlorobenzene at or above 7.5 mg/L.
D004–D043The 1,4-dichlorobenzene result is below 7.5 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
U072Unused 1,4-dichlorobenzene is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 7.5 mg/L rules out D027 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
