D023, o-Cresol.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    o-Cresol

o-Cresol at 200 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with o-cresol at 200 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Cresols are disinfectant & solvent chemicals.

Is D023 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D023 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds o-cresol at or above 200 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the o-cresol in the TCLP extract with 200 mg/L. A total o-cresol result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D023 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D023 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D023 cover?

D023 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with o-cresol at or above 200 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total o-cresol. If the cresol isomers can't be told apart, use total cresol D026 at 200 mg/L.

Is o-cresol waste D023 or D026?

CodeWhen it fits
D023The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds o-cresol at or above 200 mg/L.
D026The cresol isomers can't be told apart and total cresol is at least 200 mg/L.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 200 mg/L rules out D023 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous. The cresol footnote in the table says whether an isomer code or D026 records the result.

Which wastes take D023?

WasteWhen it’s D023
Contaminated soilIts o-cresol leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Demolition debrisIts o-cresol leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Treated wood wasteIts o-cresol leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
