D018, Benzene.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Benzene

Benzene at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Solvent drum with vapour, drawn for RCRA waste code D018, benzene. Fuel & solvent waste that leaches 0.5 mg/L or more.
Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with benzene at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. Benzene is a fuel & solvent chemical.

Is D018 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D018 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds benzene at or above 0.5 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the benzene in the TCLP extract with 0.5 mg/L. A total benzene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D018 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D018 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D018 cover?

D018 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with benzene at or above 0.5 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total benzene.

Is benzene waste always D018?

CodeWhen it fits
D018The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds benzene at or above 0.5 mg/L.
D004–D043The benzene result is below 0.5 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.
U019Unused benzene is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.5 mg/L rules out D018 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
