D021, Chlorobenzene.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Chlorobenzene

Chlorobenzene at 100 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with chlorobenzene at 100 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is a solvent & chemical feedstock.

Is D021 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D021 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chlorobenzene at or above 100 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the chlorobenzene in the TCLP extract with 100 mg/L. A total chlorobenzene result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D021 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D021 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D021 cover?

D021 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with chlorobenzene at or above 100 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total chlorobenzene.

Is chlorobenzene waste always D021?

CodeWhen it fits
D021The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chlorobenzene at or above 100 mg/L.
D004–D043The chlorobenzene result is below 100 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.
U037Unused chlorobenzene is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 100 mg/L rules out D021 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D021?

WasteWhen it’s D021
Contaminated soilIts chlorobenzene leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Parts washer solventIts chlorobenzene leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Solvent-contaminated wipesIts chlorobenzene leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
