D019, Carbon tetrachloride.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Carbon tetrachloride

Carbon tetrachloride at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with carbon tetrachloride at 0.5 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is a chlorinated solvent.

Is D019 hazardous waste?

Yes. Waste is D019 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds carbon tetrachloride at or above 0.5 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the carbon tetrachloride in the TCLP extract with 0.5 mg/L. A total carbon tetrachloride result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D019 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D019 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D019 cover?

D019 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with carbon tetrachloride at or above 0.5 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total carbon tetrachloride.

Is carbon tetrachloride waste always D019?

CodeWhen it fits
D019The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds carbon tetrachloride at or above 0.5 mg/L.
D004–D043The carbon tetrachloride result is below 0.5 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply.
U211Unused carbon tetrachloride is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.5 mg/L rules out D019 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D019?

Contaminated soilIts carbon tetrachloride leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
Parts washer solventIts carbon tetrachloride leaches at the TCLP limit or above.
