D022, Chloroform.
Characteristic hazardous waste
Chloroform
Chloroform at 6 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Is D022 hazardous waste?
Yes. Waste is D022 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.
Compare the chloroform in the TCLP extract with 6 mg/L. A total chloroform result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.
D022 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D022 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.
What does D022 cover?
D022 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total chloroform.

Is chloroform waste always D022?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D022 | The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chloroform at or above 6 mg/L. |
| D004–D043 | The chloroform result is below 6 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply. |
| U044 | Unused chloroform is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient. |
Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 6 mg/L rules out D022 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
Which wastes take D022?
| Waste | When it’s D022 |
|---|---|
| Contaminated soil | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Solvent-contaminated wipes | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
| Waste pharmaceuticals | Its chloroform leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
Which codes sit beside D022?
| Code | What it is |
|---|---|
| D018 | Benzene |
| D019 | Carbon tetrachloride |
| D020 | Chlordane |
| D021 | Chlorobenzene |
| D023 | o-Cresol |
| D024 | m-Cresol |
| D025 | p-Cresol |
| D026 | Cresol |
