D020, Chlordane.
Characteristic hazardous waste
Chlordane
Chlordane at 0.03 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.
Is D020 hazardous waste?
Yes. Waste is D020 when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chlordane at or above 0.03 mg/L. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.
Compare the chlordane in the TCLP extract with 0.03 mg/L. A total chlordane result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.
D020 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D020 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.
What does D020 cover?
D020 applies when a representative sample gives a TCLP extract with chlordane at or above 0.03 mg/L. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total chlordane.

Is chlordane waste always D020?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D020 | The TCLP extract of a representative sample holds chlordane at or above 0.03 mg/L. |
| D004–D043 | The chlordane result is below 0.03 mg/L, but another contaminant or characteristic can still apply. |
| U036 | Unused chlordane is thrown away pure, as technical grade, or as the product’s only active ingredient. |
Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.03 mg/L rules out D020 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
Which wastes take D020?
| Waste | When it’s D020 |
|---|---|
| Contaminated soil | Its chlordane leaches at the TCLP limit or above. |
Which codes sit beside D020?
| Code | What it is |
|---|---|
| D016 | 2,4-D |
| D017 | 2,4,5-TP (Silvex) |
| D018 | Benzene |
| D019 | Carbon tetrachloride |
| D021 | Chlorobenzene |
| D022 | Chloroform |
| D023 | o-Cresol |
| D024 | m-Cresol |
