Chlordane, alpha & gamma isomers — an insecticide

U-list unused product.

U-listed hazardous waste for unused chlordane, the alpha & gamma isomers of an old organochlorine pesticide.

Is U036 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. U036 covers the unused chlordane, alpha & gamma isomers described below when it is discarded, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is a U-listed waste, not an acute P-listed one. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.

U036 is nonacute hazardous waste. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put U036 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.

What does U036 cover?

This covers unused chlordane, alpha & gamma isomers discarded in pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. It also covers off-specification batches, residues in nonempty containers and spill cleanup residues from those products. Inactive ingredients don't stop chlordane, alpha & gamma isomers counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is chlordane waste always U036?

CodeWhen it fits
U036The unused chemical is discarded as a pure or technical grade product or as the sole active ingredient. Residues from that product also count.
D020The TCLP extract holds chlordane at 0.03 mg/L or more. The product listing may apply as well.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation meets a hazardous-waste characteristic. Check any process listings that apply too.

Both can apply, since a listed unused product can also show a characteristic. Having this chemical in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U036. Match the waste's origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, doesn't normally remove the listing. Only an exclusion, an exception or an approved delisting does.
