Laboratory test samples: 3 codes.

Laboratory test samples

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Ignitable waste

    The sample exhibits ignitability

    When to use D001
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Corrosive waste

    The sample exhibits corrosivity

    When to use D002
  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Reactive waste

    The sample exhibits reactivity

    When to use D003
A sample keeps the codes of the waste it came from. Fire, corrosive or reactive behavior gives D001, D002 or D003.

Which RCRA codes apply to laboratory test samples?

A sample keeps the composition and process history that decide its codes. 'Lab sample' is not a code.

CodeWhen it applies
D001The sample exhibits ignitability
D002The sample exhibits corrosivity
D003The sample exhibits reactivity

How do I prove the code for laboratory test samples?

Collect the sample only to test its characteristics or composition. Then meet the conditions on packaging, documentation, records, quantity, time and notification.

The exemption covers transport to a laboratory, pre-test storage and storage before timely return. It also covers return to the collector. It ends when the sample is discarded or any condition stops being met.

The ordinary testing-sample exclusion doesn't create a treatability-study exemption.

Is there another way to manage laboratory test samples?

The testing-sample exemption lasts only through qualifying transport, testing, storage and return.

Treatability-study samples use separate 40 CFR 261.4(e) and (f) conditions.
