Is Alberta 272 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Alberta 272 is an industrial category for fresh-water, salt-water and oil-invert drilling mud. Waste is hazardous only when it has a Schedule 1 property or listing and no Schedule 2 exclusion applies. The category number settles neither.
For regulated hazardous waste sent for disposal, the consignor enters the waste details on the Alberta hazardous waste manifest. Alberta’s exclusions and shipment rules still apply.
What does Alberta 272 cover?
Drilling mud. That means fresh-water bentonite gel, sodium- or potassium-salt-water mud, oil-invert mud and variations of these types. The category gives the material or process part of the Uniform Waste Code. Transport identification, transport class and the management operation are separate parts. The industrial identification guide describes the category, and the Waste Control Regulation decides hazardous status and exclusions.
