    Energy generation from waste

Alberta management-operation component.

Alberta management operation R1. Use as a fuel, other than direct incineration, or another way to make energy.

Where does Alberta R1 go on the Uniform Waste Code record?

In the management-code component. Alberta R1 describes what is done with the waste, not what the waste is or whether it is hazardous. It comes last in the Uniform Waste Code, after the waste category, transport product identification number and transport class. D operations are for disposal or treatment and R operations are for recovery or recycling.

The code must match what the receiving facility will actually do. Alberta’s guide shows how the codes are built but is not a current register of approved facilities. If the shipment needs an Alberta hazardous waste manifest, the consignor fills in the waste details and the receiver records receipt and handling in Part C. The code doesn't decide whether a manifest is needed.

What does Alberta R1 cover?

Using waste to generate energy, including as fuel, but not direct incineration. This code describes the step, not a material or contaminant. It is one part of Alberta’s industrial identification system, and the same waste category takes a different management code when the actual treatment, disposal or recovery changes.

When do I use Alberta R1?

CodeWhen it fits
R1The treatment, disposal or recovery step actually carried out matches this definition.
