Alberta oilfield waste codes
Residue after treating a crude-oil or condensate emulsion
AER oilfield waste code.
Is Alberta WSTEML hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Alberta WSTEML is the AER oilfield-waste code for residue after treating a crude-oil or condensate emulsion. It fits only waste from the upstream facilities, wells or pipelines on that route. The code alone doesn't make the waste dangerous oilfield waste.
Dangerous oilfield waste stays on the AER route inside Alberta. It needs an Alberta hazardous-waste manifest only if it is exported from Alberta. Record the AER code in the oilfield waste information. A regulated export also needs the federal movement assessment, and a generic industrial category can't replace the AER code.
What does Alberta WSTEML cover?
Material left after treating crude-oil or condensate emulsion, predominantly oil and water with few solids and possibly chemicals. It is deliberately sent to a waste facility to recover a component, after all reasonable oil-recovery measures. Directive 051 covers deep-well disposal. The code is tied to upstream oilfield origin. The actual composition and properties still decide whether the waste is dangerous and how to handle it.
When does residue after treating a crude-oil or condensate emulsion Alberta WSTEML fall under Alberta WSTEML?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| WSTEML | The waste comes from the AER upstream oilfield route and its material matches this stream. |
Origin matters. Waste from an unrelated industrial activity doesn't become oilfield waste because its material has a similar name.
