Spent acetone, xylene and related solvents

Use F003 only when the waste stream and non-specific Schedule 12 source both match.

Spent non-halogenated solvents from non-specific sources, such as acetone & xylene. Stream and source must both match.

Is Federal F003 hazardous waste?

Yes, if the listing and federal definition apply. Federal F003 is the listing for spent acetone, xylene and related solvents. The source, composition, concentration or test result must match, and the exclusions in SOR/2021-25 still apply.

On federally regulated international shipments, the applicant enters the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions still apply.

What does Federal F003 cover?

Spent xylenes, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethylbenzene, ethyl ether, methyl isobutyl ketone, n-butyl alcohol, cyclohexanone or methanol. It takes blends made only from those solvents, some blends with at least 10% of the named F001, F002, F004 or F005 solvents before use, and their recovery still bottoms.

Official wording
The following spent non-halogenated solvents: xylenes, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethyl benzene, ethyl ether, methyl isobutyl ketone, n butyl alcohol, cyclohexanone and methanol; all spent solvent mixtures and blends containing, before use, only the above spent non-halogenated solvents; and all spent solvent mixtures and blends containing, before use, one or more of the above spent non-halogenated solvents, and a total of 10% or more (by volume) of one or more of those solvents listed as F001, F002, F004 or F005; and still bottoms from the recovery of those spent solvents and spent solvent mixtures.

Is spent acetone, xylene and related solvents always Federal F003?

CodeWhen it fits
F003The spent solvent, blend or recovery bottom matches F003's named solvents and pre-use blend makeup.

Decide from the material's origin, use, composition and test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still govern.
