  • Federal F source codes

Spent cresol, cresylic acid or nitrobenzene solvents

Use F004 only when the waste stream and non-specific Schedule 12 source both match.

Spent non-halogenated solvents from non-specific sources, such as cresols & nitrobenzene. Stream and source must both match.

Is Federal F004 hazardous waste?

Yes, if the listing and federal definition apply. Federal F004 is the listing for spent cresol, cresylic acid or nitrobenzene solvents. The source, composition, concentration or test result must match, and the exclusions in SOR/2021-25 still apply.

On federally regulated international shipments, the applicant enters the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions still apply.

What does Federal F004 cover?

Spent cresols, cresylic acid and nitrobenzene. It also takes blends that held at least 10% by volume of those solvents or the named F001, F002 or F005 solvents before use, with still bottoms from recovering the qualifying solvents or blends.

Official wording
The following spent non-halogenated solvents: cresols, cresylic acid and nitrobenzene; all spent solvent mixtures and blends containing, before use, a total of 10% or more (by volume) of one or more of the above spent non-halogenated solvents or those solvents listed as F001, F002 or F005; and still bottoms from the recovery of those spent solvents and spent solvent mixtures.

Is spent cresol, cresylic acid or nitrobenzene solvents always Federal F004?

CodeWhen it fits
F004The spent solvent or recovery bottom is a named solvent or a blend with 10% or more of them before use.

Decide from the material's origin, use, composition and test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still govern.
