F037, Refinery primary oil-water separation sludge.

  • Federal F source codes

    Refinery primary oil-water separation sludge

Use F037 only when the waste stream and non-specific Schedule 12 source both match.

Primary sludge from the first oil-water separator in petroleum refinery wastewater treatment. Stream and source must both match.

Is Federal F037 hazardous waste?

Yes, if the listing and federal definition apply. Federal F037 lists refinery primary oil-water separation sludge. The source, composition, concentration or test condition on record must match, and the exclusions in SOR/2021-25 still apply.

On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.

What does Federal F037 cover?

This is refinery sludge from gravity separation of oil, water and solids in process wastewater or oily cooling water. That includes separators, tanks, ditches, sumps and stormwater units that take dry-weather flow. K051 and the separately described non-contact cooling-water and biological-treatment streams are excluded.

Official wording
Petroleum refinery primary oil, water and solids separation sludge; sludge generated from the gravitational separation of oil, water and solids during the storage or treatment of process wastewaters and oil cooling wastewaters from petroleum refineries, including those generated in oil, water and solids separators, tanks and impoundments, ditches and other conveyances, sumps and stormwater units receiving dry weather flow; sludge generated in stormwater units that do not receive dry weather flow; sludge generated from non-contact once-through cooling waters segregated for treatment from other processes or oily cooling waters; sludge generated in biological treatment units that employ one of the following treatment methods: activated sludge, trickling filter, rotating biological contactor for the continuous accelerated biological oxidation of wastewaters, or high-rate aeration (including sludge generated in one or more additional units after wastewaters have been treated in biological treatment units). Waste listed in Part 2 as K051 is excluded.

Is refinery oil-water separator sludge Federal F037 or another code?

CodeWhen it fits
F037Sludge from the first gravity separation of refinery wastewater, and not K051 or an excluded stream.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
