    Corrosives

Use H8 when the material presents corrosives.

Corrosives, meaning waste that destroys living tissue on contact and can damage goods or transport if it leaks.

Is Federal H8 hazardous waste?

Not from this code alone. Federal H8 is one classification component for describing hazardous waste or hazardous recyclable material. It records a constituent or characteristic. Federal status depends on all the evidence and on the definitions and exclusions in SOR/2021-25.

On federally regulated international shipments, the applicant enters the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. Also apply the movement rules and exclusions.

What does Federal H8 cover?

H8 covers material that chemically damages living tissue on contact, or damages goods or transport equipment if it leaks. It may carry other hazards too. The IWIC description covers corrosive effects and is separate from a province’s pH or steel-corrosion test.

Official wording
Any substance or waste that, by chemical action, causes severe damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, materially damages or destroys other goods or the means of transport. It may also cause other hazards. (Corrosives)

Is corrosive waste always Federal H8?

CodeWhen it fits
H8Chemical action severely damages living tissue, or a leak materially damages goods or transport equipment.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and what the tests show. A shared chemical or process word isn't enough, because the full wording and any federal exclusion still apply.
