Oxidizing
Use H5.1 when the material presents oxidizing.
Is Federal H5.1 hazardous waste?
Not from this code alone. Federal H5.1 is one part of how hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material are described. It names a characteristic, and federal status depends on the full evidence and on the definitions and exclusions in SOR/2021-25.
On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.
What does Federal H5.1 cover?
This covers material that can start or feed the burning of another material, usually by giving off oxygen. It need not burn itself. What matters is its effect on other material, not whether the waste itself burns.
- Official wording
- Any substance or waste that is not necessarily combustible itself but that may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause or contribute to the combustion of other material. (Oxidizing)

Is oxidizing waste Federal H5.1 or another code?

|---|---|
| H5.1 | The material can cause or support the burning of another material, usually by releasing oxygen. |
Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
